Kim Cattrall, semi-naked, as “Titian’s Diana”

Sex And The City star Kim Cattrall posed semi-naked in a photo version of Titian's masterpiece Diana and Actaeon.

The Mirror reports that “The Sex and the City star stripped in a campaign to prevent a classic work by Titian being sold abroad.

The original canvas is one of two being sold for £100million by the Duke of Sutherland. He has given the National Galleries until December 31 to raise half the money to buy it from him and keep it for the nation.

Top British artists, including Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Lucian Freud, have petitioned Downing Street to save the painting. The photo including Kim - by artist Tom Hunter - will be featured tonight on BBC2's Culture Show.”

AP adds: “BBC2's The Culture Show challenged Tom Hunter to create a 21st century version of the painting after he backed the campaign to raise £50 million to keep the artwork on public display.”

Guardian suggests Spot the difference. Photograph: Reuters/Tom Hunter/BBC/PA :)

Tom Hunter on Kim Cattrall: “Kim is perfect for Diana… She combines beauty with a sense of threat.”

Sex And The City in Yerevan

It was good to see Sex And The City: The Movie showing at one of the main cinemas in Yerevan - Moscow Cinema. There is big BUT however. Unless you have seen TV series, it would be hard to appreciate the movie, especially considering its reservations.

Unfortunately, most Armenians have not seen TV version of it. Russian NTV channel was broadcasting it, and it was passed unnoticed in Armenia where TV is filled with countless of low quality soap operas (foreign and local).

In my previous post I mentioned that Sex and The City made quite an impact on Western audiences in terms of liberating sex talk and showing a women's side of the 'story'. And it's great entertainment.

There are so many sharp one-liners and catch phrases in TV series that it is impossible for me to choose a favourite one. Below is just one of the quotes chosen randomly:

Wake up! It's 2000. The new millenium will be about sexual expression. It won't matter if you sleep with men or women. It will be about sleeping with individuals. Soon everyone will be pansexual. It won't matter if you are gay or sraight.

Here is hoping that after the movie Armenian audience would have an opportunity to enjoy the TV series as well and appreciate Sex And The City in full. It would be an eye opener for conservative traditional male-dominated mentality still prevalent (at least on surface) in Armenian society. The question is: Do we have brave enough TV channel to start the prime time 'revolution'?

P.S. What I am saying here may seem like a gross exaggeration, but it's with these steps, which at times are more effective than any legislation or training programme, we could facilitate changes in the mindset. Remember, TV is the most accessible media in Armenia, and Armenians love TV series.

Sex and The City: The Movie

I am a big fan of Sex and the City TV series, so you could imagine how much I was waiting for the release of the film version and managed to watch it on the first day of its release in London - 28 May.

Sex and The City made quite an impact on Western audiences in terms of liberating sex talk and showing a women's side of the 'story'. And not only... Not only it's a great entertainment, but it makes you think and could be quite helpful in various 'life' situations too. Not infrequently, when I was home feeling down, all I needed to do for a quick 'cure' was to put it on DVD, and exchange my reality with that created based on Candace Bushnell's best selling novel. It is urgently needed to be shown in Armenia (I mean TV series), where only few watched it either via Russian TV, overseas or DVDs.

Only in very rare cases TV productions transformed into the big screen successfully. Therefore, I did not have very high expectations. My main disappointment with the movie is its lack in sufficient edginess. There was also scarcity of sharp one-liners and catch phrases which TV series were so famous of. Overall, the writing was not as sharp as in TV series. And it was a bit too long. Still, I enjoyed it, it was pleasant enough, it was like meeting your (not so) old TV friends. And I will watch it again, soon.
