"Inside Out" - preview of Liana Aghajanian's feature story in Los Angeles magazine about gay Middle Eastern Club Nur

Look so much forward to reading this new feature story "Inside Out" about L.A's gay Middle Eastern club Club Nur by one of my favourite journalists Liana Aghajanian.

Here is a preview picture and description, via Liana's Instagram (lianaagh). Btw, this club is run and frequented by Armenians too.

"In the greater Middle East, being gay means anything from harassment to jail, violence and murder. At L.A's Club Nur, Middle Eastern patrons can be themselves in more ways than one. My first feature for Los Angeles magazine on a one of a kind club and safe haven for LGBT Middle Easterners where there is no distinction between sexuality and culture. Check it out in the May 2014 issue on stands now #journalism #losangeles #lgbt #middleeast"

Armenian all-female punk rock band Pincet heats the things up during Istanbul Gay Pride week

Girls, you rock!

Pincet had a super-cool headlining gig at one of Istanbul night clubs as part of Istanbul Gay Pride week.

I absolutely loved the type of non formal AM language used by Lala Aslikyan reporting live from Istanbul. Below are selected extracts - sorry, in Armenian only, as only with AM you will get the ‘salt’ of what has been reported :)

Lesbian couple at first 'Kiss Party' in Tbilisi

I wonder how people would have reacted if there was gay male couple kissing there, although based on the crowd gathered at this particular night club in Tbilisi, it seemed like a gay friendly venue in general.

What captured my attention more, however, that NewsGeorgia that originally reported the news (RU) put "female couple" within quotation marks as if they do not consider them like a normal "couple"...
Tiflis Tourism.

UK Eurovision entry Blue Royal Wedding themed performance at G-A-Y (Heaven nightclub) in London

Thoroughly enjoyed performance by Blue - UK Eurovision representative - at popular gay club G-A-Y (Heaven nightclub) in London tonight. At first, club promoter Jeremy Joseph conducted his Eurovision themed quiz. Then Blue started their performance with the Royal Wedding themed entrance. A fabulous one (you may see it towards the end of the video).

I am so routing for Blue to win the Eurovision. In any case, they were fab at G-A-Y, and very sexy, indeed. You rock, guys.

Gay scene in Batumi (+ updated Georgia Gay Guide)

As summer holiday season is upon us, and many gay Armenians will spend their vacations in Georgia, including Batumi, I thought it would be useful to present below this brief info on gay scene in Batumi, via Gay Batumi blog.

Have a look also at Georgia Gay Guide which I updated for the first time after I first posted it 3 years ago.

I know, despite promises, I did not update my Armenia Gay Guide for the last 2 years. Sorry for that. Will update it within a week.

If you have any updates, comments re Armenia or Georgia gay guides, please do let me know.

Batumi gay life is most active during high summer season, when it is mostly crowded.

During low seasons there is still some gay scene, but not as good as during hot summer days.

At the moment there are no dedicated gay bars or clubs in Batumi, but most of them (especially on a boulevard) are gay friendly.

Cruising:

- Alley between boulevard and beach (the best)
- Beach close to the lighthouse in pishcheviki area
- Around old railway station

Arame at Moscow gay club?

One of the ‘hottest’ news of the last 2 days was the report by Armenia Today (see below) that popular Armenian pop singer Arame performed at one of the Moscow gay clubs for Caucasus gays in Russian capital. If this is true, then good for Arame, as he reportedly got a new army of fans. In past, I posted about Sirusho’s performance at Tel Aviv’s gay club (here and here).

However, my attempts to confirm this info via friends in Moscow were unsuccessful. Main Moscow gay clubs denied that Arame performed there.

P.S. here is Arame's official website: http://www.arame.am

Jan Jan as a "summer smash for European gay disco"

Italian gay news website made this very interesting comment after the first semi-final about Armenian song in this year Eurovision - Jan Jan by Inga and Anush Arshakyan.

Here is a quote, via Google Translate:

"Armenia (the song has all the characteristics to be a summer smash for European gay disco but dances and costumes were just too "folk" for Moscow)."

Last year Armenian entry Sirusho's Qele, Qele became a European club hit, being played at many gay and straight clubs, particularly popular in Greece, as well as at a London Gay Pride.

Spotted: David Gevorkov of Fresh Art at a gay party in Moscow

Paparazzi.ru spotted David Gevorkov of Fresh Art studio at a gay party in Moscow, looking cool and hot.
I posted earlier that the famous trio of Fresh Art studio (Moscow) is working on Armenia Eurovision 2009 representatives Inga & Anush Arshakyan stage image and performance design. The Fresh Art comprised of 2 Armenians (Alexander Siradeghyan and David Gevorkov, born in Tbilisi) and an Azerbaijani (Aslan Akhmadov, born in Baku).

Cocoon – new gay friendly bar in Yerevan

Interestingly, this news was first delivered yesterday via Twitter @ArmenianNews:

“Armenia's first Gay Bar, "Cocoon" - opens in central Yerevan with large crowd.”

I am so not regretting for joining Twitter. Thanks to Onnik for inspiring me to do so :)

Strictly said, this was rather a re-launch than a launch, as it replaced a former techno bar with the same name Cocoon.

Also, Cocoon is not the first gay bar in Armenia. The very first gay bar in Yerevan (and Armenia) was Meline’s.

As far as I understand, it would be more correct to call it a gay friendly bar, rather than a gay bar. In any case, good news for sure. I’ve been told that ambience at Cocoon is cool, and people have good time there. (Cocoon is on Tumanyan street)

Time to update my Armenia Gay Guide. I know, I promised to do it quite some time ago, but could not find time, sorry for that. Now I have even more reasons to do so. Will do it asap.

Thousands of Iranians celebrate Novruz in Armenia due to "liberties"

Thousands of Iranians choose to celebrate Novruz in Armenia. Referring to the Public Radio of Armenia, Huliq says that "close to 20,000 vacationers from neighboring Iran have traveled to Armenia to celebrate Novruz, the Iranian New Year in Armenia due to liberties, affordability and warm weather."
The young people from Iran travel to Armenia with large groups to be able to celebrate Novruz while they can attend Yerevan's numerous nightclubs and can drink in public. Whereas in Iran you can only drink inside your house and there is no such a thing as public drinking.

The reporter of the Armenia radio interviewed a young lady who is staying in front of Yerevan hotel saying "look I can have my beer here and don't have to carry a scarf, which is an obligation in Iran." [...]

"We went to night clubs, danced and were able to have good time with our friends. Yerevan is near to Iran, full of good people and provides good opportunities for fun and celebration," says 25 years old Amir from Iran while shopping in Yerevan and who thinks the traditions are too strict in his country Iran.
As the report pointed out further, "It is estimated that an average vacationer spends $1000 U.S. dollars in Armenia per week, which includes most of the expenses, including hotel and meal. Therefore, 20,000 Iranian tourists leaving $20 Million dollars in the Armenian economy is a good investment in the country of 3.5 million people."

As far as I know from various sources, for the same reasons many Azeris tend to spend their Novruz holiday in Georgia.

As posted on this blog, Iranian artists and gays seek freedom in Armenia too. This is VERY relative, of course, from a local Armenian perspectives, but pretty significant for Iranians.

Here is the morale of this story. Under current economic conditions, focus on tourism should become one of the priorities. And as this report suggests, more social liberties will attract more tourists, and subsequently more money to Armenian state budget and local businesses. Even if for practical reasons, it's time to think of pink pound (or euro/dollar, if you wish).

Pincet - all-female punk rock band in Armenia

Pincet is an all-female electropunk rock band based in Armenia. They recently opened a MySpace page for the band and have posted since a few good songs there. Love it.

Band members are Tsomak (guitar, lead vocals), Astghik Melkonyan (drums) and Jenya (keyboard). Tsomak is an artist, women rights activist, and known from a former punk rock band Incest which was an "original all-female Armenian punk rock band" formed in 2000 and active till 2004.

Below is a photo (source) of Pincet rock band at Avantgarde Folk Club in Yerevan, performing for the World AIDS Day 2008 in Armenia.
