On cranes and being “Gay, Smart and Bold”

Amused. Received this news via my “gay + Armenia” news feed.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ As a result of a recent public opinion poll conducted by the Armenian Society for the Protection of Birds (ASPB) and LOLO children’s journal, the Common Crane was recognized as `Bird of 2010 ` in Armenia. [...]

ASPB is the representative of BirdLife International in Armenia.

LOLO is a children’s intellectual journal intended for children. as well as their parents.

Adhering to the motto “Gay, Smart and Bold”, the magazine is aimed at broadening children’s scope of mind, developing their taste and boundaries of cognition. It covers various themes including sports, music, painting, literature, zoology, science, history and intellectual games.

I know, they use “gay” meaning “cheerful” here. Still, could not hide my smile reading this news :)))

Young male lizards use 'transvestite trickery'

MELBOURNE (AFP) – Young male lizards in South Africa imitate females to fool aggressive older males into leaving them alone, in an example of transvestism in the natural world, researchers have found.

The lizards not only avoid fights but gain access to females under the nose of their more macho rivals, the South African and Australian researchers discovered.

They found that young male Augrabies flat lizards (pictured) delayed displaying the extravagant coloration of sexually-mature males until they were able to defend themselves adequately.
