Help PINK Armenia to open LGBT centres outside capital Yerevan - in Vanadzor and Gyumri

Great cause for new year donation to support establishing LGBT community centres in 2 major cities outside Armenia capital Yerevan - Vanadzor and Gyumri.

33K USD will help to establish the centres and to cover running costs for a year. The costs include logistics, rent, refreshments in the centres, services of professional psychologists and lawyers.

PINK will then apply to other programs to sustain the centres beyond the first year. If successful, this could serve as a basis to expand community centres in more places in Armenia.

Mamikon is one of the few people in Armenia who is not afraid to openly speak about his sexual orientation. During his teenage years, he had an inner struggle, which took him nearly two years to come out. Now he fights with the world outside to be accepted just the way he is; his desire is to form a peaceful life for the LGBT community and for himself.

Мамикон - один из немногих в Армении, кто не боится открыто говорить о своей сексуальной ориентации. В подростковом возрасте он боролся сам с собой, и ушло почти два года на то, чтобы понять себя. Теперь Мамикон борется с внешним миром, чтобы его принимали таким, какой он есть, и просто хочет мирной жизни для себя и ЛГБТ-сообщества.

Մամիկոնը Հայաստանում բնակվող այն քիչ մարդկանցից է, ով չի վախենում բարձրաձայնել իր սեռական կողմնորոշման մասին: 14-15 տարեկանում նա ներքին պայքարի մեջ էր իր դեմ. երկու տարի պահանջվեց, մինչև Մամիկոնն ընդունեց իրեն այպիսին, ինչպիսին կա: Հիմա պայքարն արտաքին աշխարհի հետ է: Նա խաղաղ կյանք է ցանկանում ԼԳԲՏ համայնքի ու իր համար:

Harvey Milk in Armenia (2): 'Milk' was shown on a national TV channel H2

His life changed history. His courage changed lives.

When I first watched Milk in London in January 2009, my first thought was "We need someone like Harvey Milk for Armenia. Someone who will inspire. Someone who will lead civil rights movement."

My second thought was whether the film will be shown in Armenia. I knew that it won't be released in cinemas, but there should be no problems with the DVDs.

However, I did not expect the film to be shown on Armenian TV channels so quickly. Always like pleasant surprises, and always happy to share them with you.

First, it was Tsayg TV channel in Armenia's second city Gyumri. They showed Milk in April 2009. Mamikon of PINK Armenia posted his impressions after watching the film: "I learn a lot from Harvey Milk, even all the phrases that he said are in my mind. Hope one day I can be so strong like him and I can do at least part of his work. I wish one day to stand on the top of the mountain with you and feel the wind of freedom."

What is even more significant is today's news from Yerevan, that Armenia's national TV channel H2 showed Milk tonight. News were first broken via Twitter. These are truly tweets of the day for me:

Killing of Armenian teenager over online social network insult highlights a "culture of violence" in our society

News that a teenager in Gyumri, Armenia's second largest city, was murdered after online Odnoklassniki (Russian version of Facebook, extremely popular in Armenia and post-Soviet states) insult spread over the Internet via AP, and then Armenian news outlets.

YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — Police say an Armenian teenager was killed after a dispute on a popular social networking Web site. Interior Ministry spokesman Sayat Shirinian said Wednesday that 17-year-old Tigran Tadevosian died in a hospital shortly after being assaulted by four teenagers on April 26. He said Tadevosian was attacked after he insulted a young woman in a chat room on Odnoklassniki.ru, a widely popular Russian version of Facebook. Police have arrested one suspect in the attack in the western city of Gyumri. Odnoklassniki.ru claims to have more than 35 million users in Russia and other former Soviet republics.

Commenting on the killing of a teenager, Blogian says (and I completely agree with him) that this tragic incident highlighted a "culture of violence, uneven relationship between men and women (where the latter often seek “protection” from other men), and a failed police system":

"It would be unjust to use this story to generalize Armenia, but there is a pattern of violence in the society whether starting online or in real life. Several years ago, for instance, an acquaintance at the time from Gyumri (the city where Tigran was killed) told me about his friends’ online “heroism:” straight men, posing as gay, would find online hookups, make a date with the real gay guy, show up with a gang and assault him. In Armenian chat rooms, men start “fighting” or “defending” a girl and then meet up for fights."

Harvey Milk in Armenia - Gyumri rules! Tsayg rules!

WOW! What a fantastic news!! Just read on PINK Armenia that a local Tsayg TV in Armenia’s second largest city Gyumri was showing Milk (Harvey Milk) yesterday and today.

Yesterday I came to Gyumri for 3 days to conduct a training session in the frames of “Global Health Week of Action”. At night I was watching TV and I was so happy that many channels were showing comedy, the best choice for the 1st of April. Suddenly I noticed that “Tsayg” local TV is showing “Harvey Milk”, they also repeated the movie in the afternoon of April 2, I want to remind that this is the channel that in December, 2007 invited me to their live talk show about sexual minorities.

It was my dream to watch this movie, to see the person who struggled for freedom, tolerance and equal rights.

Harvey was a person who was living for his community and never giving up, protecting the rights of people who are the victims of discrimination and intolerance. […]

I learn a lot from Harvey Milk, even all the phrases that he said are in my mind.
Hope one day I can be so strong like him and I can do at least part of his work. I wish one day to stand on the top of the mountain with you and feel the wind of freedom. […]

I was always wondering if this film would be shown in Armenia. To learn that it was shown in Gyumri on a local Tsayg TV… well done! Gyumri rules! Tsyag rules!
