Apricot Groves film: Iranian Armenian trans man returns to Armenia...

I want to see this film. At least based on trailer and reading about the film here and there, seems worth watching. And it's being showcased in a number of film festivals, including LGBT film festivals.

Hope it will be released soon in London or on VOD platform. And importantly in Armenia too.
***
Aram, an Iranian-Armenian trans man living in the U.S. since childhood, returns to Armenia to meet his girlfriend's conservative family. Over the course of the day-long journey, Aram's brother helps him prepare for the meeting, while also coming to terms with Aram's transition. Written and directed by Pouria Heidary Oureh, this quiet and introspective film beautifully illustrates the bittersweetness of reconnecting with a culture that may not be accepting of who you have become.

Tangerine: transgender revenge story, intertwined with Armenian storyline

Tangerine was premiered this week in London as part of the London Film Festival.

Transgender revenge story, raw, realistic, filled with elements of comedy and drama, with Almodovar-like touch, and played by transgender people.

Intertwined with that was a story of a typical Armenian family in LA who moved there from Armenia capital Yerevan. Any Armenian will be able to identify at least partly with that family, whether in reference to their own family, relatives or friends.

Highly recommended. And very relevant to the National Coming Out Day.

And to note that this film was shot using an iPhone !! You would never realise that unless you read about it. Great achievement by director and the whole cast and crew.

Following Q&A, I received a poster of the film and asked director Sean Baker and one of the lead actresses Mya Taylor to sign it for me.

Nouvelles d'Arménie on discrimination of trans people & LGBT rights violations in Armenia

While Armenia human rights ombudsman, conveniently ‘forgetting’ what his position is all about, targets trans sex workers and uses neo-nazi website to justify his discriminatory statement, the October issue of prominent French Armenian magazine Nouvelles d'Arménie publishes an extensive report on discrimination of trans people in Armenia, with a reflection of LGBT rights violations in general.

Below is a brief outline in English, accompanied by pictures of original French article. Many thanks to Adrineh for translation.

***
"Denounced by their own family. Banned by an army that considers them mentally ill. Violated and beaten without the police coming to their aid. Armenia is a hostile land for homosexuals, bisexuals, and, a fortiori, for transsexuals and transvestites. Many of them choose exile where they benefit from refugee status."

Then the article mentions a few details of a few of the trans sex workers. These sex workers are violated, beaten but the police don't help them, and in fact, says it's their fault. "Each night, we go out never knowing if we will be alive tomorrow," says Aram. Transsexualism is not recognised in Armenia and even less accepted, liked to a psychological pathology and mixed up with homosexuality.

The article cites PINK Armenia's 2011 survey in Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor: 72.1% of those asked have a negative perception of homosexuality and 71.5% believe the state should take measures to "combat it". They cite a psychologist named Davit Galstian: "There's a real phobia of homosexuals in our society; they are considered like beasts". Also cites an Armenian AIDS Center statistic that "only 2%" of AIDS cases were identified as being "related to homosexual practices".

Next section talks about the work of PINK Armenia: not only promoting sexual health and education, but also protecting the rights of the LGBT community. Head of PINK Armenia Mamikon Hovsepyan is cited. Mamikon mentions that though sex between two men was decriminalised in 2003, thus fulfilling one of the conditions of Armenia joining the Council of Europe and though in 2008, Armenia ratified the UN declaration on sexual orientation and gender identity, no legislation exists today to condemn discrimination, the inciting of violence or hate crimes or [hate] speech against people because of their sexual orientation. This legal vacuum was illustrated in May 2012 with the attack on gay-friendly bar DIY.

This fuelled a rise in violence against the LGBT community, not only by political actors from all sides, overtly oppressive, denouncing them (LGBT) as unacceptable and a menace to Armenian society, but also by religious authorities and local media, which relay messages of homophobic impunity.

The article mentions the Diversity March, 21 May 2012, and the counter-demonstrators who said "Send the homosexuals to Baku" and "Armenia without homosexuals". Article mentions Parada film screening which had to be postponed and finally cancelled because of extremist groups.

"In this context, there is hardly any other choice for many than exile." Article concludes by saying that many go abroad (get a visa for Europe), notably France, get refugee status under the category of being persecuted because of sexual orientation in Armenia.

Reported hate crime: trans sex workers beaten by group of youth in downtown Yerevan cruising park

Local media reported Armenia police press release that group of youth attacked [“beaten up”] trans sex workers in downtown Yerevan cruising park (Kom aygi, or pleshka) on 25 September 1.10am. Attackers being questioned by police. Motives of the attack were not explicitly stated in the press release. However, the way the info was presented implies homophobic hate crime. No more details are known, as of now.

Interesting to point out the following: 1. police formally reported the incident. 2 police used acceptable non-discriminatory wording to refer to gay people in Armenian “նույնասեռական”, even though the victims may not necessarily be gay per se, but rather trans sex workers. 3. victims of the crime reported the incident to the police.

What would be more important to find out, however, if the attackers will get formally charged with the crime and persecuted according to the law. This will be a testimony of changes, if any.

Reports of hate crime in Yerevan against transvestite sex workers

News.am reports (confirmed by police) that last night shots were fired from the air gun towards transvestite sex workers in downtown Yerevan’s cruising park Kom aygi (also called Pleshka), in front of the Yerevan municipality. Minor injuries were reported. Suspects - two young guys - were swiftly identified, detained and questioned by police. Investigation is underway.

Media reports presented this crime within the context of latest anti-gay violence in Armenia. Although it has not been confirmed yet that the motives were indeed hate crime, considering the circumstances, it is more than likely. Of course, I cannot exclude the possibility of personal client/sex worker related incident.

In any case, two positive aspects I’d like to point out:

1. Sex workers reported the incidence to the police (in absolute majority of similar cases in past, crimes remained unreported).
2. Police acted swiftly to identify suspects.

Of course, it’s a completely different matter re: how the investigation will be carried out, and whether those who committed the crime will be held accountable before the law.

Will update, in case of new developments.

Cher about her age, boyfriends and child’s gender reassignment surgery

Extracts from her interview with the latest issue of OK magazine.

Quote 1: “Age is a major pain in the ass”.

Quote 2: “I love having boyfriends”.

Quote 3: “Everyone who went before me is an influence for me and everyone who comes after me is influenced by me”.

About her daughter Chastity’s gender reassignment surgery:
OK: As a mother it must be difficult that your daughter is now your son...
Cher: It’s hard - I screw up on the pronouns so often but she’s very soft about it and cuts me some slack. It took much more courage for her to do it because I am her mom, she didn’t have one moment of peace.

IWPR roundtable on LGBT issues: "Transsexual men, women in Armenia advised to go abroad"

Read also: IWPR roundtable: "Transgenders in Armenia" - speech by Lusine Vayachyan (AM)

*via Epress.am

Transsexual (TS) men and women have no constitutional rights or options for seeking healthcare services, said Lusine Vayachyan, a journalist and LGBT community representative at a roundtable on LGBT issues held today and organized by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR).

According to her, TS men and women have to go abroad; secure funds for travel, accomodation, visas and surgery; and then see a psychiatrist before they can be eligible for sex reassignment surgery (SRS). And then they have to forget about returning to Armenia because “here they are no one, neither their former sex nor their current sex,” she said.

She further added that doctors in Armenia either don’t know or don’t want to know the difference between transsexuals and “hermaphrodites” (intersex people).

Vayachyan recalled a friend of hers, Norayr, a citizen of Armenia who wants to change his sex from female to male, who went to see an endocrinologist who, after running chromosomal tests determind Norayr as having female chromosomes, advised him to go see a psychiatrist for “treatment.”

When Norayr mentioned that being transsexual is no longer considered a mental disorder and he does not need to be “treated,” the endocrinologist advised him to go to Russia.

Vayachyan mentioned that Norayr has “never met a doctor in Armenia who knows what it is to be transsexual.”

“Unlike most of the society, policemen in Yerevan are not homophobic”

Interesting story (AM) by the Armenian Version (journalist Lusine Vayachyan) about 19 yrs old transsexual Armenian Erik from Yerevan.

Although they refer to Erik as “transvestite”, from what I understood reading the article and clarifying few details with the author, Erik is in fact transsexual.

What I find of particular note in this story is the case of physical violence Erik and his friends encountered in Yerevan. Not only they reported the case to the police (majority of such cases remain unreported), but according to Erik, police was working “within the law” and “overall, unlike most of the society, policemen in Yerevan are not homophobic”.
I have to say, lately I’ve heard of similar positive attitude from few other LGBT Armenians who live or visited Yerevan. Although for now I can’t generalise such statements, it’s a positive sign, indeed. I can only hope it will become a norm.

Pleshka and Hraparak’s obsession with transvestites and gay cruising in Yerevan

Armenian homophobic daily Hraparak can’t get enough of ‘juicy’ gay-themed topics. At the time of posting, this reference to Hraparak’s publication was the most read entry on Tert.am. So we know at least one of the reasons why they are so into everything gay related.

Hraparak seems pretty frustrated that Yerevan mayor was so far unsuccessful in fighting a “meeting place for gays” right next to the City Hall. They also write about “surprise” (what a mild word) by Diaspora tourists who witness cross-dressing gays in central Yerevan.

I have to say, many in Armenian media confuse cruising places with “meeting places for gays”. As I mentioned before in reference to A1+ report, there is also a tendency to put an equal mark between sex workers and gays.

The most infamous cruising place in Yerevan is Kom aygi (also called Pleshka), close to the Yerevan City Hall and the French embassy. This is not a “meeting place for gays”. This is a place to pick up gay (almost exclusively transvestite) or transsexual sex workers and a place for cruising.

Pleshka turns particularly busy at night but beware of possible police raids. There are also occasional reports of gay bashing and reports of thefts in/around the area.

Google Translate Armenian dictionary kind of sucks… for now

So today’s main news is that Armenian language is now supported by Google Translate. Great news, of course. Or so it should be. I understand that it’s in ‘ALPHA’, meaning in early development stages. BUT… Who on earth is behind the Armenian dictionary for Google Translate?

When you try translating the acceptable Armenian word to refer to gays - “միասեռական”, it brings the right English equivalent - “gay”. That’s fine. They also translate “bisexual” as “երկսեռ”, which could be OK too, I suppose.

However… I tried translating “gay” (English to Armenian), and according to the ‘dictionary’ behind the Google Translate service, “gay” means “թեթեվաբարո” (‘immoral’ or something like that, a term in Armenian frequently used to refer to sex workers or those perceived as such). This is the main option. There is also a list of other ‘relevant’ options, including similar word “անառակ”. Interestingly, it only considers “gay” as an adjective.

adjective

6. վառ

And if you try “թեթեվաբարո” in Armenian to Russian, you get it as “гей” - “gay” in Russian - too.

Is this a display of homophobia or blatant lack of knowledge of contemporary linguistics?

Funnily enough, for “lesbian” they have a Russian version of the word in Armenian “լեսբիանկա”. Btw, there is no Armenian equivalent of “transsexual” or “transgender” there, for now at least.

Cher's son Chaz Bono to formally change his name and gender

Musician, writer and activist Chastity Bono (Chaz Bono), son of pop icon of Armenian origin Cher and Sonny Bono, has formally filed a petition to LA judge to change his name and gender. This follows last year's gender reassignment surgery (female to male). Back then Cher issued a statement in support of Chaz: "Chaz is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support," she told PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny and although I may not understand I will strive to be understanding. The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child."

Below is the latest report, via BBC.

Cher's son Chaz Bono files sex change petition in LA

Cher's son Chaz Bono has asked a judge in Los Angeles to formally change his name and gender following the sex change surgery he had last year.

The 41-year-old, who was born Chastity Sun Bono, now wants to be known as Chaz Salvatore, according to a petition filed earlier this week.

He revealed last June he had undergone the surgery calling it "the best decision I've ever made".

At the time, Cher promised to support her child on his "difficult journey".

"Although I may not understand, I will strive to be understanding," said the singer, who had Chastity with her first husband, the late Sonny Bono, in 1969.

A hearing has been scheduled for 6 May in Santa Monica, California.

Chaz Bono is a gay rights campaigner who appeared on the American version of Celebrity Fit Club in 2006.

The name Chastity came from the title of the 1969 film Cher made with her first husband Sonny, who died in a skiing accident in 1998.

Turkey: stop violence against transgender people

Multiple Murders Highlight Inadequate State Protection
February 22, 2010

Protecting people and preventing violence means more than investigating after the fact. Without meaningful government action to affirm their rights and ensure their safety, transgender people in Turkey will continue to live in fear.
Juliana Cano Nieto, researcher in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights program at Human Rights Watch

(Ankara) - The recent murders of two transgender women in Turkey highlight  an ongoing pattern of violence and the urgent need for stronger protection measures by the government, four Turkish and international human rights organizations said today in a letter to Turkish authorities.

IWPR: Azeri transsexuals face social stigma

This is an example from Azerbaijan, but problems (social, legal, human rights...) faced by transsexuals are very similar in all South Caucasus countries.

IWPR: Caucasus Reporting Service

Azeri Transsexuals Face Social Stigma
Sex change just the first hurdle as society fails to accept gender reassignment.

By Leyla Leysan in Baku (CRS No. 527, 15-Jan-10)

Inga Ivanova seems like a normal 23-year-old woman as she sits in central Baku in light make-up, a jumper and jeans, but her story is one rarely heard in Azerbaijan. She was born a boy.

“I felt like a woman in a man’s body ... passers-by used to avoid me. I was never flamboyant, I did not shock people, I tried to hide who I was, that I was breaking away from normal modes of behaviour, but all the same I was different,” she said.

On leaving school, like any young Azeri male, she had to report for military service, and was sent for a hospital examination. Experts declared her unfit to serve in the army, clearing the way for her to do what only 100 or so Azeris had done before her – undergo gender reassignment surgery.

She turned to the internet for information on the procedure, since the Azeri health authorities offered no help. Without medical supervision or support she put herself through the necessary hormone therapy. A year later, the Funda medical centre completed the physical operation to remove her male sexual organs.

But that was not the end of her troubles. Azerbaijan has inherited the bureaucracy-heavy system of the Soviet Union, and she must gain a new passport in her new name to have access to any state services. There is no legal regulation of gender reassignment surgery or transsexuals, so this is proving difficult, not least because doctors refuse to conduct any tests on her.

“Now I am trying to get a psychiatrist to give me the correct diagnosis – transsexualism – and even this is proving very hard. It is a rare case, and legally there is nothing written down about the basis or conduct of sex reassignment surgery and the rights of a citizen afterwards. To get a passport, I will need – after getting a certificate – to appeal to a court,” she said.

Transsexualism was classified as a psychological illness early in the 20th century, and there has been no modernisation of the state’s position since.

“All attempts to ‘normalise’ transsexuals have always failed. The only successful way to ‘treat’ such people is for them to live as a person of the other sex, which is what they psychologically are,” said Jamal Azimzade, the senior specialist at the Funda medical centre. He said the first sex change operation in Azerbaijan was conducted in 2002.

“A 26-year-old man, who completely felt himself to be a woman, appealed to me. He thought of his sexual organs as revolting. The operation was conducted over three stages and ended well. However, the ‘new’ young woman was forced to leave the country for social reasons. People who change their sex in our country are forced to live with their old documents, to undergo military service and struggle with a load of other unpleasantness as a consequence of their lack of documents.”

He said transsexuals were also often the target of aggression and hatred, for example when they try to work or have to present their documents.

“Before undergoing the gender reassignment operation, the patient must go through several stages, including talking to a psychiatrist, since this is a serious step in a person’s life that cannot be undone,” Azimzade said, adding that he normally refused to talk to the media about his work.

“Representatives of the media normally are looking for sensation, and report this problem non-objectively, misinforming their readers and viewers, thus plunging the problem into even deeper misunderstanding.”

Azerbaijan has very few resources for transsexuals, although one man trying to help is Kamran Rzayev, chairman of the Union for Gender Development and Enlightenment, who said around 60 people had turned to his organisation for help.

“Of course, there are many more of them, but many do not know that there is somewhere they can go for help. In Azerbaijan, people with ‘gender denial syndrome’ are completely without rights. The level of discrimination against these people is very high, since transsexuals lose their right to work, to leisure and even to security. Going outside they risk not only being mocked, but also being beaten,” he said.

“It’s not just that these people suffer from childhood and made to feel outcasts, they do not even have the right to a normal life. Because of the ‘disagreement’ between their external appearance and what is written in their documents, they cannot get a decent job. Therefore they are often forced to earn money from prostitution, which turns society against them even more. Many turn to this to earn money for the operation and the hormone therapy, which does not come cheap.”

He said the government needed to change the law to allow transsexuals to gain new documents without the humiliation they currently face.

“Specifically, we need a new law on gender identity, which would regulate the process of getting new documents. Then a transsexual could gain a new passport without a court decision, just on the basis of a psychiatrist’s decision,” he said.

“Even in Islamic Iran, where homosexuality is prosecuted, they address gender dysphoria issues normally. According to Islamic law, transsexuals are considered acceptable on the basis of religious teaching.”

Turkey: latest LGBT news/links

1. Gay refugees flee persecution but remain at risk (WorldFocus)
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) refugees are among the most vulnerable refugee groups in the world today, according to Neil Grungras, the executive director of Organization for Refuge, Asylum & Migration (ORAM).[...]

ORAM is currently providing legal representation to LGBT refugees in Turkey. The vast majority of them are Iranians who have fled execution or other severe punishment in Iran and Turkey happens to be their “country of first asylum.”

Worldfocus producer Gizem Yarbil interviews Neil Grungras about ORAM’s refugee clients in Turkey. A refugee and immigration advocate with more than 20 years of experience, he has worked extensively on behalf of vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers. [...]

Our clients in Turkey are predominantly sexual minorities - lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender individuals from Iran. The abuses they face almost always emanate from the Iranian authorities. These include harassment, arrest, interrogation, torture, beatings, and execution.

It is estimated that 4000 LGBTs have been executed in Iran since 1978. While no one can be certain of the exact figure, LGBTs live in constant fear of discovery or outing there.[...]

While the Turkish government does not persecute LGBTs, conditions in Turkey for these individuals are extremely harsh. Like other refugees there, our clients are typically not permitted to work, and have no access to normal health care, social assistance or housing. LGBTs in Turkey are also targeted with violence by local populations, and the authorities are often unable to extend them protection. Several of our clients in Turkey have been beaten and many have been threatened with violence. In some towns, the situation is so severe that some refugees fear venturing outside in daylight. During the past year, many of our clients have reported threats and actual violence against them. A few clients were beaten so seriously that they required hospitalization.

We recently detailed these and other abuses in our co-publication with Helsinki Citizens Assembly – Turkey titled Unsafe Haven: The Security Challenges Facing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Asylum Seekers in Turkey.[...]

3. Acvists target Turkish law (Pink Paper)
The Pink Life LGBTT Solidarity Association in Ankara, Turkey, and the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission have teamed up to demand that Turkey's "Law of Misdemeanors" be rewritten to protect transgender people's rights to free expression, association and movement.

"In recent months," the groups said, "the harassment of transgender and transsexual persons in Turkey has intensified as police abuse the country's Law of Misdemeanors to legitimise daily fines, extortion, eviction, detention and police brutality. The law gives security forces tremendous leeway to punish any noise, disobedience and disturbance, with virtually no oversight in how the law is applied or recourse to those who are penalised."[...]

Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance

Transgender Armenians blogging:

Transgenders in Armenia (AM, RU, EN)

Hye Trent (EN)

*Statement by ILGA-Europe

Today, the Transgender Day of Remembrance is marked across the world and Europe. This Day was established following a murder of Rita Hester in 1998 and serves as a reminder of existing prejudice, hatred and discrimination against trans people.

Transgender Europe’s Trans Murder Monitoring Project reveals that more than 160 murders of trans people in the last 12 months of which 16 took place in Europe:

* Turkey – 6
* Italy – 4
* UK – 2
* Spain – 2
* Serbia – 1
* Russia – 1.

The number of murders is however only the tip of the iceberg with regards to trans discrimination and marginalisation in European societies today. Trans people experience high level of discrimination in employment, access to healthcare and other goods and services. Trans people are also particularly vulnerable to violence and hate crimes. This high level of discrimination has this year been formally acknowledged by Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe’s Human Rights Commissioner, who launched his “Human Rights and Gender Identity Issue paper”.

ILGA-Europe takes today’s occasion to extend its appeal to all European governments to assess where they are scoring poorly in terms of Commissioner Hammarberg’s recommendations and address the gaps without further delay.

ILGA-Europe calls on the European Commission and EU Member States to fully enforce the European Court of Justice’s jurisprudence through implementation of EU Gender Equality Directives vis-à-vis gender identify.

Article about transgender Armenian in Ankakh weekly (in Armenian): Gago or Anna? (female by passport only)

This article about transgender Armenian appeared in Ankakh weekly in June 2009, but I missed it back than. Thanks to GayArmenia.com for bringing this to my attention.

Chaz Bono makes first public appearance with girlfriend Jennifer Elia

*365gay.com reports

Chaz Bono made his first public appearance last night since announcing his female to male gender transition. [read my earlier post - Cher's daughter Chastiti Bono comes out as transgender person]

Here’s Chaz and girlfriend Jennifer Elia at 2009 Outfest’s Opening Night Gala of “La Mission” at the Orpheum in Los Angeles.

Chaz is so likeable - and I think it’s great that the transgender community has another public face. The Daily News did a surprisingly warm story about his appearance last night, which is another good sign.
