Charles Aznavour's “Comme Ils Disent" feature in Divas show, Las Vegas

The fame of Charles Aznavour's groundbreaking "Comme Ils Disent" ("What Makes a Man a Man”) - "the first song about homosexuality" - extended to Las Vegas, featuring in popular Divas show. In fact, it was one of the strongest performances in Divas, emotionally charged, very nicely executed.

"Red Dress" LGBT-themed Georgian short film

This film is produced by Identoba - Georgian LGBT rights group, based in Tbilisi. Via personal story it reflects events last year when homophobic mob, led by Georgian orthodox church priests, attacked LGBT rights activists in Georgian capital Tbilisi, marking IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia).

Nazik Armenakyan’s “The stamp of loneliness” - book launch and multimedia exhibit on life of Armenia trans people

Great report from Yerevan - by CivilNet (AM) - of unique book launch and multimedia exhibit by Nazik Armenakyan reflecting life of Armenian trans people - “The stamp of loneliness”.

Over years, Nazik has been working on LGBT art/photography/multimedia project (see also previous posts on this blog), focusing mainly on transgender and transvestite sex workers.

What makes Nazik’s works outstanding is that she avoids sensationalism, focusing on people, on their stories, an insight she gained access to by the trust of very individuals she portraits.

Many thanks to Nazik for her work, especially considering Armenian realities and circumstances. It’s very telling re the latter that the launch was not public and by private invitations only.

 

Armenia human rights ombudsman uses anti-gay undertones to beg for more money from state budget

Here we are. Not only Armenia human rights ombudsman flirts with neo-nazi but uses anti-gay undertones to ask for more money from the state budget.

Responding to journalists questions, after trying to secure more money for his agency from the state budget, he reiterated his intention to be consistent to get rid of “moral perversion”. Once again, he was referring to trans sex workers and gay cruising area. Exploitation of this issue in Armenia is simply used to fuel anti-gay prejudice and discrimination. Ombudsman knows this pretty well, and wants to re-invent himself as a fighter for “morality”. Ha!

Օմբուդսմենը լրագրողների հետ զրույցում խոսել է նաև Կոմայգու խնդրից՝ հայտնելով, որ իրենք հետևողական են լինելու, որպեսզի մանկական այգին ազատվի այլասերվածությունից։  «Եթե առաջիկա շաբաթներին և ամիսներին չտեսնենք գործընթացներ, դուք նորից մեզնից կլսեք մեր պահանջի մասին»,- ասել է Կ․Անդրեասյանը։

As I mentioned in my earlier post [Scandalous: Armenia human rights ombudsman targets trans sex workers and cites neo-nazi website as a basis for his statement], couple of weeks ago, ombudsman Karen Andreasyan issued a statement full of discriminatory language and references to “morality” as opposed to human rights.

What was worse, as a ground for his statement he cited neo-nazi web site (!) and their article full of homophobia and hatred.

In past, I did have hopes that this ombudsman may have devotion to human rights. But apparently he was simply playing a role at a time when Armenia was seemingly on a path to European integration. Now, with the decision to join Russia led Customs Union, there is no longer need to play a ‘human rights devotee’.

The institute of human rights ombudsman is supposed to be an important body to safeguard human rights of citizens. However, if this institute is led by people like Andreasyan, whether we have such institute or not, will not be making any difference.

Either human rights ombudsman has to be someone who is devoted to the notion of human rights, or I’d say ditch the institute altogether and divert the state budget money to other areas, e.g. pension. I would also advise international human rights bodies and foreign embassies in Armenia to stop taking ombudsman Karen Andreasyan seriously and not wasting their time and resources on him.

He is not an ombudsman. He is a joke.

Nouvelles d'Arménie on discrimination of trans people & LGBT rights violations in Armenia

While Armenia human rights ombudsman, conveniently ‘forgetting’ what his position is all about, targets trans sex workers and uses neo-nazi website to justify his discriminatory statement, the October issue of prominent French Armenian magazine Nouvelles d'Arménie publishes an extensive report on discrimination of trans people in Armenia, with a reflection of LGBT rights violations in general.

"Denounced by their own family. Banned by an army that considers them mentally ill. Violated and beaten without the police coming to their aid. Armenia is a hostile land for homosexuals, bisexuals, and, a fortiori, for transsexuals and transvestites. Many of them choose exile where they benefit from refugee status."

Then the article mentions a few details of a few of the trans sex workers. These sex workers are violated, beaten but the police don't help them, and in fact, says it's their fault. "Each night, we go out never knowing if we will be alive tomorrow," says Aram. Transsexualism is not recognised in Armenia and even less accepted, liked to a psychological pathology and mixed up with homosexuality.

The article cites PINK Armenia's 2011 survey in Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor: 72.1% of those asked have a negative perception of homosexuality and 71.5% believe the state should take measures to "combat it". They cite a psychologist named Davit Galstian: "There's a real phobia of homosexuals in our society; they are considered like beasts". Also cites an Armenian AIDS Center statistic that "only 2%" of AIDS cases were identified as being "related to homosexual practices".

Next section talks about the work of PINK Armenia: not only promoting sexual health and education, but also protecting the rights of the LGBT community. Head of PINK Armenia Mamikon Hovsepyan is cited. Mamikon mentions that though sex between two men was decriminalised in 2003, thus fulfilling one of the conditions of Armenia joining the Council of Europe and though in 2008, Armenia ratified the UN declaration on sexual orientation and gender identity, no legislation exists today to condemn discrimination, the inciting of violence or hate crimes or [hate] speech against people because of their sexual orientation. This legal vacuum was illustrated in May 2012 with the attack on gay-friendly bar DIY.

This fuelled a rise in violence against the LGBT community, not only by political actors from all sides, overtly oppressive, denouncing them (LGBT) as unacceptable and a menace to Armenian society, but also by religious authorities and local media, which relay messages of homophobic impunity.

The article mentions the Diversity March, 21 May 2012, and the counter-demonstrators who said "Send the homosexuals to Baku" and "Armenia without homosexuals". Article mentions Parada film screening which had to be postponed and finally cancelled because of extremist groups.

"In this context, there is hardly any other choice for many than exile." Article concludes by saying that many go abroad (get a visa for Europe), notably France, get refugee status under the category of being persecuted because of sexual orientation in Armenia.

Scandalous: Armenia human rights ombudsman targets trans sex workers and cites neo-nazi website as a basis for his statement

Apparently, Armenia human rights ombudsman Karen Andreasyan has solved all the pressing human rights issues in Armenia and now calling for the police... to eliminate prostitution and target in particular trans sex workers and gay cruising area.

It is simply astonishing to see the type of language human rights ombudsman is using, full of discrimination and references to the notion of “morality”.

"It is necessary to eliminate such moral perversity because it is not only immoral, but also illegal" - just an example of kind of wording that the human rights ombudsman (!) using in his statement.

It’s as if in past he was at least trying to act in accordance to his position, but now with Armenia’s decision to join Russia sponsored customs union, ombudsman came out the real self, in full disgrace.

Even more scandalous is the fact that as a 'basis' to his statement ombudsman Karen Andreasyan cites neo-nazi Armenian Aryan Union website's utterly homophobic, full of hate link. [see below screenshot and full statement in Armenian - with a reference to the link on hayary(dot)org]

Karen Andreasyan, you are such a loser. You suck. Big time.

mOTHER Armenia (photo exhibit)

I like the way they put it: mOTHER Armenia. Great to see incredibly talented and free-minded group of Armenian women photographers and photojournalists presenting their works in Yerevan's centre for contemporary arts - NPAK.

Including in the exhibit are the works by my favourite Nazik Armenakyan, from her "Transgenders in Armenia" photo-project, documenting the lives of transgender or transvestite sex workers.

Transgenders are a big part of my project about LGBT people in Armenia. Photographing transgender sex workers was a shock at first— unreal or, more accurately, surreal. I was shaken: they weren’t just a found object in photographic terms. It was a phenomenon that contradicted and negated all my previously held notions of man and woman.

“I am a woman who is not accepted by the society,” out of all the women I photographed, none would say this or anything similar. Yet every time any of them walks along the street people look with amazement. And I would look at them just as everyone else. There was strange interest and respect I felt towards them, so I decided to get to know them closer, talk to them, and take their photo. (photo story)

Reported hate crime: trans sex workers beaten by group of youth in downtown Yerevan cruising park

Local media reported Armenia police press release that group of youth attacked [“beaten up”] trans sex workers in downtown Yerevan cruising park (Kom aygi, or pleshka) on 25 September 1.10am. Attackers being questioned by police. Motives of the attack were not explicitly stated in the press release. However, the way the info was presented implies homophobic hate crime. No more details are known, as of now.

Interesting to point out the following: 1. police formally reported the incident. 2 police used acceptable non-discriminatory wording to refer to gay people in Armenian “նույնասեռական”, even though the victims may not necessarily be gay per se, but rather trans sex workers. 3. victims of the crime reported the incident to the police.

What would be more important to find out, however, if the attackers will get formally charged with the crime and persecuted according to the law. This will be a testimony of changes, if any.

Reports of hate crime in Yerevan against transvestite sex workers

News.am reports (confirmed by police) that last night shots were fired from the air gun towards transvestite sex workers in downtown Yerevan’s cruising park Kom aygi (also called Pleshka), in front of the Yerevan municipality. Minor injuries were reported. Suspects - two young guys - were swiftly identified, detained and questioned by police. Investigation is underway.

Media reports presented this crime within the context of latest anti-gay violence in Armenia. Although it has not been confirmed yet that the motives were indeed hate crime, considering the circumstances, it is more than likely. Of course, I cannot exclude the possibility of personal client/sex worker related incident.

In any case, two positive aspects I’d like to point out:

1. Sex workers reported the incidence to the police (in absolute majority of similar cases in past, crimes remained unreported).
2. Police acted swiftly to identify suspects.

Of course, it’s a completely different matter re: how the investigation will be carried out, and whether those who committed the crime will be held accountable before the law.

Editor-in-chief of Russia Today Margarita Simonyan on her Sochi gay club experience with Armenian twists & not only

Margarita Simonyan, the editor of Russia Today, announced on Twitter that she is going to write a column about her experiences in Sochi [Russian seaside resort] gay club. The column is pretty long, with interesting and not only gay related twists, I’d recommend to read. Below is an extract (RU) of the copy of her column that Margarita re-posted on her blog today.

-- Что в мире творится! – возмущается дядь Арут.
-- Это не в мире, это в Англии, -- успокаивает его Анжелка.
-- Нет. Не в Англии, -- вдруг мрачнеет Фауст. Опускает голову и беспорядочно чертит ножом по столу. – Я вам должен одну вещь сказать.
            Брат поднимает на нас свои сверкающие черные глаза под сверкающими черными бровями и медленно произносит:
-- В Сочи открыли гей-клуб.
            Пауза.  И сразу после нее:  
-- Да ну нах??? – хором вопят по-армянски мои родственники и еще человек 20 за соседними столиками, которые с увлечением слушали наш разговор.
-- Открыли, в натуре, гей-клуб! – клянется Фауст. -- Я, правда, сам не верю, я думаю, там в клубе никого нет, а вокруг клуба одни натуралы сидят на корточках, семечки жуют и ждут, когда первый гей появится.
-- Едем туда! – решаю я. Мне же надо веселую колонку писать. А веселее, чем гей-клуб в городе, где каждый второй – Фауст Сирунянц, сложно себе что-то представить.
В общем, несмотря на протесты Фауста и ужас в глазах дядь Арута, решаем ехать. Еще и берем с собой маму – развеяться. Брат тоже едет с нами, потому что кто же нас отпустит одних. Остается отпросить у мужа Анжелку.
Моя подружка бежит от себя много лет. Она родилась Иннокентием Анненским, но в 21 нецелованной вышла замуж, с тех пор рожает детей и варит туршу из фасоли.  Муж у нее – бандит. С бычьей шеей и мертвой хваткой – все как положено.
И я должна отпросить у него подругу в гей-клуб.  
-- Какой гейклуб-мейклуб я не знаю. Моя жена дома должна сидеть. Зачем она пойдет – чтоб на нее там смотрели все? – говорит, естественно, муж.
-- Ну, брат, -- уговариваю я, -- на нее никто не будет смотреть. Там народ не по этому профилю.
-- Профиль-анфас я не знаю. Твой муж тебя не умеет воспитывать, а моя жена дома должна сидеть, базар окончен.
-- Брат, но ты пойми, ей нужно расслабляться. Это ГЕЙ-КЛУБ! Мы даже если голые придем, никому там не будем нужны!
-- Сказки мне не рассказывай! Гей-клуб она придумала! Откуда в Адлере геи?
-- Ну что ж, ну геи, что такого? Еще Блок говорил, что только влюбленный имеет право…
-- Когда блок говорил, керамзит что делал? Дальше ты что мне скажешь?
            Дальше сказать было нечего. Мы просто напоили Анжелку так, что ей уже было все равно, в какую сторону у мужа кепка. Она выключила телефон и поехала с нами.
            Первый шок случился в такси. Вместо привычного «Рафик послал всех на фиг» кассетник фыркнул на меня женским голосом: «Эппрувал энд дисэппрувал. Одобрение и неодобрение».
-- Английский учу, -- смущенно пояснил пожилой таксист дядь Мигран. – Пахомов сказал, кто английский не выучит, за Мамайку всех переселят. Чтоб не позорили Олимпиаду – так сказал.

-- Сядь, Анжела, угомонись! – кричу я. Но подруга меня не слышит. Ее несет далеко. Сквозь уроки английского, которые таксист и не думал выключать, до меня доносится непонятно к чему относящийся анжелкин всхлип:
-- Армяне – непобедимые, летающие в космос люди!
            И  тут мы, наконец, подъезжаем к клубу. Таксист сидит мрачный и злой. Фауст спрашивает:
-- Ты что, злишься на нас, дядь Мигран? Ну, выпила, женщина, не сильно она там тебе все и прожгла, и ликера разлила не так много.
-- Этот ваш клуб у меня вызывает большой дисэппрувал, -- отрезает таксист и до рубля отсчитывает нам сдачу.
            Дальше железная дверь без опознавательных знаков. На входе женщина – а, может, это был и мужчина – оглядывает Фауста неодобрительно.
-- Молодой человек раньше был в нашем заведении? – строго спрашивает она.
-- Этот-то? Конечно, был! – улыбаюсь я.
-- Сомневаюсь, -- цедит женщина сквозь зубы. Но пропускает. Внутри за столиком уже сидит моя сестра – младшая, продвинутая. Она работает в «Олимпстрое», поэтому в этом клубе бывает часто. Мы заказываем еще выпить.
            А дальше – я не могу это описать! Я только скажу, что мой брат каждые 20 секунд орал: «ААААА!!!!» -- и еще иногда орал: «Мамой клянусь, это жесть!!!!»
            На сцене, тем временем, зажигали трансвестит Вартанчик и его подруга Аза, в миру сбежавший из не скажу какой республики дзюдоист Азамат. В зале истекала слюной пара адлерских бандюков-армян.
-- Мир, труд, май! – кричала со сцены Аза. – Это лучше, чем война, безработица, декабрь!
            И мы не могли с ней не согласиться. Отпев первый номер, сверкая кружевными красными стрингами и безупречной эпиляцией всего, Аза спустилась в народ. Когда она подошла к нашему столику, брат мой, с плечами в полстола, умудрился забиться под диванную подушку.  Аза двинулась напрямую к моей сестре.
Вообще в городе моя сестра знаменита тем, что она моя сестра. Но конкретно в этом заведении моя сестра знаменита тем, что у нее четвертый размер груди.  Аза подошла к нашему столику, поцеловала сестру и объявила:
-- Пока ты накачаешь такую задницу, как у меня, твои сиськи отвиснут до пуза.
            После чего воткнула гвоздику в мою пепси-колу и вернулась на сцену.
-- Москва есть в зале? – крикнула она.
-- Да!!!
-- Официанты, запомнили, где Москва сидит? А Хоста есть?
-- Да!
-- Ну слава Богу, олигархи все тут, -- сказала Аза и стянула с себя юбку, вызвав оргазмический вопль зала и одинокий обморок Фауста.  
            Таких Аз на сцену выходило штук пять или шесть. «Откуда, откуда они все у нас?» -- хрипел Фауст. Друг друга они называли трансухами и, не побоюсь этого слова, хачихами.  Одна прочитала то, что сама назвала стихотворением Тютчева «Хачи прилетели».
Дальше девочки тянули на сцену какого-то парня, сидевшего за ВИП-столиком, его с визгом тащила обратно пришедшая с ним девица, и Аза орала:
-- Боишься мужика потерять, води его на дистотеку «Черноморец», фигли ты его сюда привела, натуралка безмозглая?
            Потом на сцену вышла та, кого Аза объявила:
-- Народная артистка Якорной щели и Туапсе Валентина Монро. 
Она спела песню «За то, что только раз в году бывает май». Неплохо, кстати, спела. Ее сетчатый лифчик трепетал поверх богатырской груди, и нежно вздымалось жемчужное ожерелье прямо под выбритым кадыком.
Ну и дальше начался совсем ужас. Аза кричала кому-то:
-- Столик, за которым орали «Пидарасы!» -- вам отдельный поцелуй!
На сцене бесновалась полуголая Лайза Минелли, Аза подбадривала: «Давай-давай, Ваенга!», -- и последнее, что я помню, это как подруга моего детства, жена бандита, не целованная до свадьбы мать четверых детей, бросила на сцену гвоздику с криком: «Вартанчик, хочу еще!»

A few trans sex workers came to the editorial offices of Epress.am earlier this week to protest two recent stories published by local daily Hraparak.

In the conversation which ensued, the guests spoke about their relationship with the police and the consequences of publishing material without verifying the facts, which could very well endanger their lives.

The photos in the video were supplied by the individuals in the photos and are published here with their consent. They did not, however, wish to have their faces visible in the video. The dialogue is in Armenian only.

"I'm the only trans Vika, I did not give any information to the paper Hraparak. I don't know who could've done something like this against me," said local Armenian cross-dresser Vika, commenting on a story published by local daily Hraparak in which a transvestite by the name of Vika threatened a businessman by the name of Hovik. The paper informed Epress.am that the story was prepared on the basis of a telephone conversation. The editors say that a transvestite named Vika called Hraparak and described the incident, which they subsequently published. Visiting the editorial office of Epress.am along with two other gay cross-dressers, Vika Swarovski insists that he's the only known transvestite Vika in Armenia, and those sources who presented themselves as such aim to endanger him.

Epress.am spoke with Hraparak assistant editor Vahagn Tevosyan and asked him to comment on Vika's statement.

"I am officially saying, not only one, but also a few dozen Vika's can contact you and say that they're not the Vika who called you, but we don't insist, that's that trans Vika who contacted you," he said.

"Whoever wrote that, let them prove it; if there's been a phone conversation, let them tell us the number," said Vika, adding that if they don't reveal who did this, he is prepared to take Hraparak to court.

"If they don't clarify who did it, I'll take them to court. I'm ready to complain. The one who presented himself as Vika and the one who wrote the open letter [referring to another story published by Hraparak] are the same person. They invented it and wrote it," said Vika, visibly upset.

"Let him take us to court, but this is all so absurd. What is he going to say, he's going to say that he's not the Vika who called us, and then?" said Tevosyan.

Recall that on Dec. 7, Hraparak published an open letter signed by "a group of homosexuals," which, according to another trans sex worker Lorena Madonna Diva, couldn't have been written by them, since, for example, the Armenian word "hamaseramol" is used in the letter which is a derogatory term. Further, according to Lorena, the statement in the letter that trans sex workers pay $100 to local police in order to work in the Children's Park (near Yerevan City Hall) is untrue. Also, the license plate number of the police vehicle noted in the letter is unfamiliar to them. Note that the community of trans sex workers in Yerevan is quite small and it's unlikely for them not to know each other or that another group of "homosexuals" who also work in the park would have written the letter.

Upon Epress.am's request, Hraparak also commented on the open letter they published.

"The eighth page of our paper is called publication of free speech. There we reserve space for such anonymous open letters," said Tevosyan.

According to Lorena, a targeted campaign has launched against them in the press recently. "They can't cook up anything [new], it began with writing against the Jehovah's Witnesses, then the emos and now us," she said.

"Every day, pedestrians, people, come and assault us, in quite a perverse way, they want us, having an interest, they begin to hit us, drive over us with their cars. We go to the police, but they respond to the case of whoever they can get money from. There are incidents where they beat, they kill in front of the eyes of the police, and the police say, that's too little for you, they have to burn you, pour gasoline and burn you," said Lorena.

Speaking to the two stories published by Hraparak, Lorena denies that any one of them could have written the letter or called in the incident. "Definitely it wasn't one of us, it was those publishers, they improvised. And all this to our detriment, police will get agitated at us, they'll come and shoot us, they'll take us to special departments at the police station, they'll hit us so hard... I know many such cases. Don't I have a right in Armenia, in my country, to express myself freely? I've told the police a thousand times, let's be friends, let's understand each other. They don't want to understand," she said.

Speaking to Epress.am, PINK Armenia President Mamikon Hovsepyan explained the situation: "Perhaps someone called [Hraparak] and informed them, but the issue is you can't generalize and write on behalf of a group. That's unacceptable. With this, they want to create tension between the police and transvestites. By disseminating such inaccurate information and different false opinions, a tense situation is created among the public. Now they're trying to attune the public against transvestites, endangering the lives of the members of this vulnerable community."

Hovsepyan noted that the Human Rights Defender isn't engaged in such issues. "They cover up the complaints; they don't even include them in their annual reports. When incidents happen, they don't appeal to the Ombudsman — they've lost hope." [...]

Interesting story (AM) by the Armenian Version (journalist Lusine Vayachyan) about 19 yrs old transsexual Armenian Erik from Yerevan.

Although they refer to Erik as “transvestite”, from what I understood reading the article and clarifying few details with the author, Erik is in fact transsexual.

What I find of particular note in this story is the case of physical violence Erik and his friends encountered in Yerevan. Not only they reported the case to the police (majority of such cases remain unreported), but according to Erik, police was working “within the law” and “overall, unlike most of the society, policemen in Yerevan are not homophobic”.

I have to say, lately I’ve heard of similar positive attitude from few other LGBT Armenians who live or visited Yerevan. Although for now I can’t generalise such statements, it’s a positive sign, indeed. I can only hope it will become a norm.

Hate crime in Baku? Double murder of two transvestites

Via Tert.am, Vesti.az reports on double murder in Baku of two transvestites. Source in Azerbaijan’s capital police district suggested of their "possible non-traditional sexual orientation”. As per reports, they were wearing women’s wigs, lingerie, and having bright coloured nail manicure. They were found dead with multiple stab wounds.

Об этом сообщили Vesti.Az в 27-ом отделении Управления полиции района.

По адресу пр. Гусейн Джавида 546 были обнаружены тела двух мужчин с многочисленными ножевыми ранами.

В результате следственно-оперативных мероприятий, проведенных сотрудниками Главного управления полиции города Баку, прокуратуры города Баку и управления полиции Ясамальского района были установлены личности убитых – ими оказались Гасымов Замиг Гасым оглу и Кузьмин Ядигяр Эльдар оглу.

По словам источника в правоохранительных органах, предположительно убитые придерживались нетрадиционной сексуальной ориентации - по полученным данным в момент совершения преступления оба молодых человека был облачены в нижнее женское белье.

Кроме того, на них был надеты женские парики, а ногтях был сделан маникюр яркого цвета.

На теле одного из убитых было обнаружено 7 ножевых ранений, а у другого – 5.

Дело передано в Бакинскую городскую прокуратуру. По поимке преступника проводятся оперативно-розыскные мероприятия.

Pleshka and Hraparak’s obsession with transvestites and gay cruising in Yerevan

Armenian homophobic daily Hraparak can’t get enough of ‘juicy’ gay-themed topics. At the time of posting, this reference to Hraparak’s publication was the most read entry on Tert.am. So we know at least one of the reasons why they are so into everything gay related.

Hraparak seems pretty frustrated that Yerevan mayor was so far unsuccessful in fighting a “meeting place for gays” right next to the City Hall. They also write about “surprise” (what a mild word) by Diaspora tourists who witness cross-dressing gays in central Yerevan.

I have to say, many in Armenian media confuse cruising places with “meeting places for gays”. As I mentioned before in reference to A1+ report, there is also a tendency to put an equal mark between sex workers and gays.

The most infamous cruising place in Yerevan is Kom aygi (also called Pleshka), close to the Yerevan City Hall and the French embassy. This is not a “meeting place for gays”. This is a place to pick up gay (almost exclusively transvestite) or transsexual sex workers and a place for cruising.

Pleshka turns particularly busy at night but beware of possible police raids. There are also occasional reports of gay bashing and reports of thefts in/around the area.

Sometimes it takes a supreme pop satirist to sum up a twisted situation in a suitably surreal way. Now, the past two gruelling months of confrontation between opposition and government in Georgia have been encapsulated in a hilarious pop video by singer Anri Jokhadze.

Taking as its theme a phrase from nineteenth-century Georgian poet-hero Ilia Chavchavadze, the Happy Nation video lampoons President Mikheil Saakashvili, his opponents, and various other Georgian celebrities, as well as satirising well-known Georgian pop-propaganda videos.

Anyone who’s familiar with the drama that’s been playing itself out on the streets in Tbilisi in recent weeks should take time out to watch. The final frames – if you get the references – are truly tragic-comic.

Armenian men in drag in downtown Yerevan… to mark Motherhood and Beauty day

Brabion Flora Service continue with its hilarious PR campaigns challenging notions of masculinity in Armenia. First, it was a naked men action to mark Valentine’s day. They announced back then that all men who would come to their flora salon in downtown Yerevan in swimwear or underwear only, would get a free bouquet.

On 7 April, to mark Motherhood and Beauty day (2nd official holiday dedicated to women in Armenia; 1st - 8 March), they had a similar free bouquet promotion, but this time only if men turn up dressed in women's clothes and wigs (necessary condition: mini skirts, high heels and wigs). The result was pretty hilarious and as unprecedented (or more!) as their previous action.

Well done, Brabion! And well done to Armenian men in drag! A truly historic occasion ;)

P.S. We did have drag shows in Yerevan in past, but in bars or clubs, never so public, in daylight.

Young male lizards use 'transvestite trickery'

MELBOURNE (AFP) – Young male lizards in South Africa imitate females to fool aggressive older males into leaving them alone, in an example of transvestism in the natural world, researchers have found.

The lizards not only avoid fights but gain access to females under the nose of their more macho rivals, the South African and Australian researchers discovered.

They found that young male Augrabies flat lizards (pictured) delayed displaying the extravagant coloration of sexually-mature males until they were able to defend themselves adequately.

But when a model dies on the runway and a murder investigation begins, Michelangelo's mobile phone footage becomes evidence.
