#Fail: Homophobe writer shortlisted for Orange Armenia book prize 2011

Orange Armenia has revealed a shortlist of candidates for their annual book prize.

Apparently, this shortlist was selected by a “professional” jury, composed of “professional” readers (whatever that means) and the winner under each literary category will be decided by the number of Facebook ‘likes’. Deadline for voting is 7 November, and the winners will be announced on 11 November 2011. Without going into discussion as to the appropriateness of Facebook ‘likes’ for deciding book prize, there is one big NO too.

Among the shortlisted writers under the category of “short stories” is homophobe Paruyr Santrosyan (Պարույր Սանթրոսյան - Մահապատժից ժամեր առաջ) who could not contain his homophobia in nominated short story too (see below few extracts (AM):

And I will not be buying into the argument that the shortlist was decided by “professional” jury. It was Orange who should have set up a clear criteria re selection process (without interfering into deciding their literary merit), i.e. it should have been unacceptable under any circumstances to select racist, homophobic etc works.

As this prize directly associated with the name and therefore reputation of Orange Armenia and French Telecom (Orange Armenia is a subsidiary of France Telecom), in an unfortunate case of that homophobe ‘winning’ the prize, this will be a disgrace for Orange.

P.S. Under this category of “short stories”, I personally ‘liked’ Armen Ohanyan’s Matryoshka. You may ‘like’ it following this link.

Orange Armenia book prize turns into farce with accusations of fake FB 'likes' masterminded by the homophobe writer. Some other writers, including Armen Ohanyan announced that they quit the contest http://ilur.am/?p=4334

Big thumbs down to Orange.

It would be very logical if you are asked how are you related to Armen Ohanyan, and why you are only talking about One writer. after all you finished your article with what you want to gain, asking ppl to vote for your friend Armen,, lollll, what a shame

I am in no way related to Armen Ohanyan. I have not met him in person, and know him only via Facebook and as a writer. I simply stated my preference at the end, because I liked his short story. It is not important for me who will win, as long as this particular homophobic writer with his homophobic short story is out of the competition. In fact, he should not be allowed in, in the first instance. That's why I blame Orange Armenia.
